Note how inextricably tied to American Exceptionalism this civility policing is. No one would argue in retrospect that anyone should have treated despots in other countries with more civility. To not understand what moment we're in here, now, is to pretend it "can't happen here."

Not only *can* it happen here; it *is* happening. And insisting on civility in response to an inhumane, authoritarian agenda will facilitate its happening, because that reserve will be exploited over and over again to consolidate power and orchestrate increasingly vile harm.

Another word for the specific sort of accommodating civility being endorsed is "appeasement." And surely history has taught us about the foolishness and futility of appeasement in response to inhumane, authoritarian threats.
