What is the best live show you've ever seen? Could be music, a play, a stand-up comic, a poetry slam, improv, performance art, an author's reading, a sporting exhibition, a fashion show, a circus, whatever.
It is so hard for me to pick just one, since I've seen hundreds of live shows in my life, but the thing that came immediately to mind was a Flaming Lips New Year's Eve show in Chicago a very long time ago. It wasn't just that the Lips put on a great show — although they did — but that being part of that crowd was just so fucking amazing. It was a theater full of undiluted celebratory joy as we all rang in the new year together, and there has rarely been a time when I have been in a room that had the feeling of that show. It was transcendent.
