This is certainly not the biggest difference between expectations and actual experience, but it's a very recent one and the first one that came to mind: Life of the Party.
It's a Melissa McCarthy comedy, so I expected to like it, but I didn't expect how much I would like it, which is a lot! It's overtly feminist and very moving, and I was just very surprised by how enjoyable it was.
And once I saw it, I understood the bad reviews, lol. Fates forfend there exist a comedic film that's not about treating women like garbage!
